You are Invited to Whaddon’s very own ‘Digging for Britain!’ Event!
Between 20th -27th May 2026 a new charity called NSIST (National Signals Intelligence & Security Trust) is coordinating an archaeological dig at the Windy Ridge site (behind Whaddon’s St Mary’s Church) with a commercial archaeology firm called Reclaim Heritage. One of the charity’s aims is the preservation of former interception sites around the country.
Windy Ridge was the wireless transmission station of the SOG (Special Operations Group) of the Special Communications Unit (SCU). Its job was to transmit the intelligence provided by the GC&CS (Government Code & Cypher School) at Bletchley Park to Allied Commanders in operational theatres around the globe. Built on concrete foundations the main building had a Nissen-hut style roof of corrugated iron on a low brick wall – the concrete foundations are still there.
Your Invite to a Free Presentation from the Archaeologists in the Village Hall!
On Thursday 21st May 2026 from 7.30 pm in the Village Hall, there will be a free talk and presentation from the archaeologists with a chance to inspect any finds along with other interesting artifacts. (This will be part of WPC’s Annual Parish meeting and a free drink will be available, tasty cakes for sale, plus much more.)
WWII Radio Station GB1SOE will be Transmitting From Windy Ridge!
And on Saturday 23rd May 2026 on Windy Ridge from around 10am will be the WWII Radio Station Team, call sign GB1SOE, transmitting signals just as MI6/SIS did to SOE agents in France, using original WWII radio equipment. Please come along, meet the radio enthusiasts and find out more.
